Porta potties in Valley heat and hurricane season

Short answer: in Rio Grande Valley heat, choose weekly service at minimum, put the unit in shade on firm, high ground, and keep the vent clear. When a tropical storm or hurricane is forecast, call your rental company right away so units can be laid down, strapped or picked up before landfall.

Why heat and humidity matter

From April through October, Brownsville, Harlingen and McAllen see long runs of 90-plus-degree days with heavy humidity. A plastic cabin in full sun gets much hotter inside than the air around it, and odor builds faster as the tank fills.

Placement rules for summer

  • Shade first: the north or east side of a building, or under trees, clear of low branches the truck could hit.
  • High, firm ground: stay off low spots and resaca banks that hold water after heavy rain.
  • Door away from the afternoon sun so the cabin doesn’t bake when opened.
  • Don’t block the vent stack against eaves or walls.
  • Wind: near the coast, set the unit against a fence or wall.

Service frequency

Ongoing rentals are commonly serviced once a week. We have set up once-monthly service for very lightly used properties, but we recommend weekly cleaning in the hot months because odor develops quickly. For crews of more than about 10 per unit, or multiple shifts, ask about twice-weekly service.

When a storm is coming

Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. A portable toilet is light enough to tip or blow over in tropical-storm winds, so:

  • Call as soon as a watch is issued for the Valley; coastal sites in Port Isabel and South Padre Island are scheduled first.
  • Depending on the site, units are laid down, strapped to a fixed structure or picked up.
  • After the storm, we reset or redeliver once roads and the site are safe.

Events in the heat

  • Add a mid-event service for events over 8 hours.
  • Add hand-wash stations; sanitizer alone runs out fast in heat.
  • For weddings and quinceañeras, an air-conditioned restroom trailer makes a real difference.
  • Deliver the day before so units aren’t set up in the midday sun on event morning.
